The Artist: BC Camplight

BC Camplight is the alias of Brian Christinzio - a New Jersey-born songwriter who moved to Manchester after his life in the US unravelled. His music veers between confessional piano ballads, erratic synth-pop and emotional collapse.

Mental illness, heartbreak, addiction, deportation - are not subtext. They’re the main event.

Each album feels like the aftermath of something. A document of a man trying to hold it together long enough to get the song down. And somehow, he does. Again and again. With melody, humour, rage and beauty.

Often all in the same verse.

The Record: The Last Rotation of Earth (2023)

This is his breakup record. Written after the end of a long relationship and recorded in the months that followed - raw, wrecked and romantic.

The title track sets the tone. It sounds grand, cinematic - but the lyrics are emotional debris. He’s falling apart in real time.

Kicking Up a Fuss is all sarcasm and catchy piano riffs - like Harry Nilsson covering a therapy session. Fear: Life in a Dozen Years is manic, brilliant, a musical breakdown staged in a glittering theatre.

She’s Gone Cold is the album’s emotional low tide. A piano ballad that strikes a balance between gallows humour and genuine remorse.

It Never Rains in Manchester is surprisingly tender. So is Going Out on a Low Note, even as it leans into the self-sabotage.

Even when it sounds upbeat, this album is dragging a broken heart across the floor.

Christinzio said he wanted this to be his masterpiece - it just might be.
